Why was nixon with his "loser image" able to win the election of 1968? what events gave him an advantage?

The only reason Nixon won his presidency was because everyone thought he would be able to stop the war in Vietnam. Also, Nixon was a Conservative (Republican) and at that time the Counter-Culture was alive so many conservatives thought he would be able to smooth out the radicals.
