What is Rick Carlisle going to be able to do that Avery Johnson couldn't?

The Little General preached defense and seemed to have good game planning. He took the Mavs to the brink of a championship just a few years ago (before they allowed Dwayne Wade to become Superman and steal the whole show). What will Rick Carlisle do differently, especially with a team that is older and not as deep?
